Keeping the top two or three success factors in front of me at all times (posted on a whiteboard) helps me to focus myself and team members on the big picture. This is especially true during the executing phase when unplanned issues come to the surface more often. Prioritizing issues based upon their impact on those success factors keeps the team focused on the right things. I find that they become ingrained into my head as I repeat them to senior stakeholders, clients and managers to keep everyone focused. The driver of the race car doesn’t need to focus on conserving gas unless it will impact his ability to finish the race.
